Professional Background
Dr. Fuad Khan is the eldest son of the renowned psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Muhammad Shafiq (Late) and Dr. Jamal Ara (Late). Following in his parents' footsteps, he pursued his MBBS degree from Khyber Medical College. He completed his residency training at Harvard Longwood Program, Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA. He did his fellowship in psychoanalytical psychotherapy and consultation liaison psychiatrist. During this time, he also worked as a staff psychiatrist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) student counseling service. After completing his training and fellowship, he returned to Pakistan and expanded on his father's legacy, turning Shafique Psychiatric Clinic into an Shafique Psychiatric Hospital, adding a 24 bed Inpatient unit, a psychotherapy clinic, a psychiatry training site and started a Psychotherapy training program laying the foundation of Psychodynamic psychotherapy in Pakistan. He conducted several workshops and delivered lectures throughout Pakistan. In 2008, he decided to move to some new horizons as Prof. M. Shafique and Dr. Jamal Ara took on to manage the expanded system that he had built. He took on the role of a consultant psychiatrist in Dunedin, New Zealand. In 2009, he was hired by Harvard Medical School as a faculty member and an attending psychiatrist at the Harvard Hospitals. Later, he moved to serve as Chief of Psychiatry and then Senior Vice President of behavioral health at Parkland Memorial Hospital for seven years. He currently works at Wentworth Douglass Hospital, a subsidiary of Mass General Brigham Hospital in New Hampshire, as chief of behavioral health and senior medical director of community health. He also continues as Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX.
He has an MBA from the University of Texas at Dallas in health care management.
In 2016, Prof. Shafique and Dr. Jamal Ara, who were growing in age, decided to reduce the scope of Shafique Psychiatric Hospital for it was hard to manage a larger system. Dr. Fuad Khan decided to rejuvenate the system by bringing in a fresh team and developed the Center for Psychotherapy and Psychiatry (CPP). The idea was to bring a system on the lines of modern evidence base care, high reliability, superior quality, and great emphasis on patient centeredness. These principles are the focus of CPP currently and Dr. Fuad Khan continues to oversee the implementation of the vision and values. He also serves as a consulting psychiatrist seeing complex patients and providing supervision to trainees in his favorite field, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy.
